The Role
The Product Engineer is a highly skilled hands-on engineer who owns the engineering development of toy products, from early functional prototypes through DFM and into high-volume production. The ideal candidate is a fast, detail-oriented CAD expert who enjoys getting into the weeds on mechanisms and part design, and who excels at translating a designer's concept into a functional, manufacturable product. Responsibilities span a variety of products across concept, design, validation testing, and manufacturing. This position reports directly to the Design Engineering Manager.
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Design and Engineering teams to develop children's toys and products that promote early-stage development
- Translate concepts from Design into functional, fully manufacturable products
- Design, build, and test prototypes to prove out functionality
- Evaluate designs relative to strict safety, regulatory and performance requirements
- Drive engineering improvements and manufacturing design changes across the existing product line, including legacy SKUs
- Manage drawing database and file storage systems to maintain version control
- Prepare engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation for manufacturing
- Design and perform product characterization tests for new and existing products
- Apply problem solving techniques and Root Cause Analysis to troubleshoot manufacturing issues
- Work directly with overseas suppliers to evaluate designs, quotations and optimize for manufacturing (travel expected)
- Provide technical support for a cross-functional startup team
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; candidates from other technical or creative backgrounds with strong technical experience will be considered
- 5+ years of experience engineering physical consumer products (toys, consumer electronics, housewares, or similar high-volume goods)
- Experience taking multiple plastic parts through DFM, tooling, and into high-volume production, including troubleshooting.
- Expert level CAD proficiency (Solidworks preferred)
- Deep understanding of mechanics of materials, polymers and design for injection molding
- Natural skill with, experience in, and love of model making and prototyping
- Exceptional technical writing skills and verbal communication skills
- Proven leadership and teamwork skills
- Proven application of drafting standards and practices, and understanding of GD&T
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- This position requires prolonged periods of constantly sitting or standing at a desk.
- This position requires constant operation of a computer and other office productivity machinery, including 3D printers and occasionally basic woodworking tools.
- The person must be able to frequently move about inside the office to access file cabinets, conference rooms, etc.
- This position is based out of Lovevery’s Boise, Idaho location and remote arrangements will not be considered for this role.
- Work is expected to be performed on-site.
- This person must be able to travel internationally at least 3 times per year.
