Why We Exist
Within a few years, AI will handle a large share of the work that happens on a medical practice's phone lines. Most of healthcare is not ready for that, and most healthcare AI is not built for it. The phone call is still where care often begins, and it still runs on voicemail, callbacks, and notes typed from memory.
Lucea is building the layer that sits inside those conversations. Today we capture practice phone calls and turn them into accurate documentation that staff can trust. From there, we bring licensed clinical protocols into the call, give practice leaders visibility into their operations, and automate more of the work as quality is proven, always with clinicians in control of clinical decisions. We started with pediatric nurse triage, one of the hardest-to-staff jobs in nursing, and we are expanding across practice types and roles.
The early results are strong. A small team has supported more than 25,000 live triage calls and converted every design partner into a paying customer. A triage nurse four days into using Lucea told us: "Don't take this away from me." We are hiring the people who will take it much further.
Why This Role Matters
- We're looking for engineers who already build with AI at the center of how they work. You try new models and agentic tools because you're curious what they can do, and you want to put that curiosity to work on a product clinicians rely on during live patient calls.
- We have a product that practices can buy, connect to their phone systems, and use every day, and we're laying the foundation for what comes next: clinical assistance, practice analytics, and voice automation that takes on more of the work as quality is proven.
- You'll work across the stack: backend services, phone and EHR integrations, and the systems that power our AI workflows. You won't be handed detailed specs. You'll work directly with our engineering and customer teams and our CEO to scope, build, and ship, and as the team grows, your scope can grow with it. You'll write code clinicians depend on daily, so quality, reliability, and security matter from day one
What You'll Own
Backend Development
- Build and maintain backend services in Python and Node.js.
- Design and evolve data models in PostgreSQL.
- Build integrations with EHRs, phone systems, and third-party APIs, and help make them repeatable across practices.
- Write clean, tested, well-documented code.
AI Systems
- Build and improve the LLM workflows behind live transcription, note generation, and chat, including the edge cases real calls bring.
- Help build the evaluation and testing infrastructure that shows whether AI outputs are accurate, complete, and consistent.
- Work with streaming data and real-time voice pipelines.
- Use AI tools and agents to speed up your own work, and share what works with the team.
Infrastructure and Reliability
- Help maintain and improve our deployment pipeline.
- Monitor production systems and respond to issues.
- Contribute to logging, observability, and alerting.
Collaboration
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
- Work directly with clinical and product stakeholders to understand requirements.
- Contribute to architecture decisions as the team grows.
What Good Looks Like
- You ship features across the stack reliably, with little hand-holding, from a rough problem to working, tested code.
- Production stays healthy on your watch: issues are caught and resolved, and the systems you touch get more observable and reliable over time.
- Engineers and stakeholders trust your code and your judgment, because it's clean, tested, and secure by default.
- You take ambiguous problems and drive them to a working solution instead of waiting for a spec.
- You bring new AI tools and techniques to the team, and the team works faster because of what you try.
What We're Looking For
Must Have
- 2+ years of software engineering experience with production systems.
- Proficiency in Python or Node.js (ideally both).
- Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
- Comfort with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar).
- Strong fundamentals: data structures, API design, debugging, testing.
- AI is how you build. You use AI coding tools and agents daily, and you ship faster because of it.
- You're curious about the frontier. You try new models and agentic tools as they come out, and you have opinions about what they're good for.
- You work well with autonomy in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Strong Signals
- Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other regulated industries.
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs: prompts, evals, agents, or AI features in production.
- Experience with real-time systems (voice, streaming, WebSockets, telephony).
- Things you've built with AI that you can show us: open source, side projects, or experiments.
Who This Role Is Not For
- You need fully specified tickets before you can start.
- You want to specialize in a single layer of the stack and avoid the rest.
- You're uncomfortable owning reliability and security alongside feature work.
- You prefer a slow, fully documented environment over a fast-moving one you help shape.
- You see AI tools as optional, or you're waiting for them to settle before you learn them.
Compensation
- Base salary: Competitive for a seed-stage health tech company.
- Equity: early-stage grant. You'll be one of our early engineers.
- Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, commuter, fitness, 401(k), HSA, unlimited PTO.
